Biography

Onur Arslan is a graduate student at UC Davis, in anthropology with a designated emphasis in science and technology studies. He graduated from Istanbul University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations in 2012. He received his MA degree in Philosophy and Social Thought program at Istanbul Bilgi University. His dissertation project focuses on the emergent relationship between digital forensics and counter-terrorism in Turkey.

I and my colleague Prof. Ebru Kayaalp carried out an ethnographic study among earthquake scientists to understand how the long-awaited Istanbul earthquake was produced as scientific truth. We examined how this future event and its catastrophic threat (whose time, place, and scale remained uncertain) created a network that interconnected existing fault lines with state-of-the-art devices, scientists, and bureaucrats.
