Redlining is an example of historic disadvantage which preserved racial segregation, intergenerational poverty, and the continued wealth gap between white Americans and most other groups in the U.S. Redlining is used to refer to de facto housing segregation created by a number of historic events including banks refusing to give home loans to Black buyers, realtors steering black buyers away from white neighborhoods, and government maps created to deny people federal housing aid if they lived in predominantly black neighborhoods.
