Risk Management Plan (RMP) facilities

A prime example of a fast disaster hazard is a Risk Management Plan (RMP) facility. These are industrial facilities that store more than defined amounts of highly hazardous chemicals and are required to submit the worst case scenario (i.e. the release of large amounts of hazardous chemicals, as in Bhopal) to the EPA. Limited information about these facilities is available online because of concerns about terrorism. RMPs include chemical storage facilities, water treatment plants, oil refineries, and various other types of facilities.

Aerial San Andreas Fault

Active fault lines, like the San Andreas fault in California, have the potential to cause major earthquakes and are considered as a type of fast disaster hazard.

Oroville Dam

Dams are an example of a fast disaster because flooding can occur if a dam fails or if floodwaters overflow. The Federal Emergency Management Agency classifies 15,000 United States dams as high-hazard potential. The image depicts the 2017 Oroville Dam crisis in Butte County, CA, where about 200,000  residents were evacuated when heavy rainfall damaged the main and emergency spillways. Power plants and lines with the potential to cause fires or explosions, including nuclear power plants are fast disaster hazards. In 2017, Southern California Edison power lines came in contact with each other which caused the Thomas Fire that burned 281,983 for over 40 days in Ventura and Santa Barbara County. Hazardous Materials and Transportation

Major roadways used by trucks carrying hazardous materials with the potential to cause explosions are another type of fast disaster hazard.

High Pressure Natural Gas Line

Another type of fast disaster hazard are hazardous material pipelines with the potential to cause explosions.
