Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy: Initiatives

Text

Community Enhancement: The Delta Conservancy leads efforts to protect, enhance, and restore the Delta’s economy, agriculture and working landscapes, and environment.

Our Community Enhancement Grant Program prioritizes funding for projects that address recreation and tourism, historic and cultural preservation, and environmental education. It is funded through the California Drought, Water, Parks, Climate, Coastal Protection and Outdoor Access for All Act of 2018 (Proposition 68) and Climate, Access, and Resource (CAR) funding.

Ecological Restoration and Climate Adaptation: “In addition, the Conservancy works to adapt landscapes to be resilient to climate change. The Conservancy believes the Delta region’s economic and environmental health are linked to the area’s vulnerability to potential climate change impacts, such as increased flooding or severity of drought.”

Delta Working Lands: “The Delta Conservancy is committed to supporting economically and ecologically sustainable working lands in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and Suisun Marsh. The Fish Friendly Farming and Delta Drought Response Pilot programs are two current efforts that further that goal.”

Education and Enrichment: “The Conservancy plays an important role in sharing information with Delta communities, agencies, non-profit organizations, and citizens. We have worked with multiple educational groups to teach youth in the Delta about native wildlife and stewardship. Our team has visited students in their classrooms to teach watershed science and led field trips to give students a hands-on opportunity to measure water quality and learn about the Delta ecosystem. The Conservancy has also worked with the students of the Franklin High School Plastics Club on a trash monitoring project to develop an activity guide and other educational materials.” Current projects include the Delta Waterway Cleanups and Student and Landowner Education and Watershed Stewardship (SLEWS)
