March 18, 2023: Tour of Eastern Coachella Valley/North Shore of Salton Sea Lunch at El Tranvia

  • Mary Valdemar spoke on the importance of land acknowledgments at the beginning of environmental justice gatherings 

  • North Shore Community Park 

    • built with funding of a few million dollars

    • community came together for the planning and development of the park (advocating for native plant species, the play area that represents the historical significance and size of the Salton Sea)

    • some community residents want that money to be invested in basic resources like access to water or infrastructure like building sidewalks to reach the Salton Sea on hot days

  • North Shore Beach and Yacht Club

    • The dried brown dust that lines the sand is composed of dried carcasses of a bug,  Water Boatman (health effects of this brown dust on the people living in the surrounding area aren’t closely examined yet) - Dr. Ryan Sinclair

    • The Yacht Club is a community center and is often used as a cooling center
