TOXIC TOUR STOP 5: BEESEN WATERWORKS

The village of Beesen is situated in the southernmost part of the city of Halle (Saale) in Saxony-Anhalt. Its old village center, surrounded by the high-rise public housing projects of southern Halle, lies beautifully on the Saale-Elster meadows — with Schkopau and the Buna Werke situated right across. Historically, the Beesen waterworks have played a very important role in the provision of water for the entire city of Halle. Could their shutdown in 2007 be in any way related to the proximity of the chemical plant?
