Critical Commentary

This past September 2019, Llactalab—an urban studies research group at University of Cuenca—proposed a tactical urbanism intervention with the aim of reducing pedestrians’ mobility risks in the streets around El Vado.

Part of the problem was the lack of transit signals that hampered pedestrian crossing at the bridge right before La Condamine street. The intervention also restricted certain traffic turns, in order to reduce the amount of cars entering El Vado.

This proposal got traction when Cuenca’s Municipality’s joined the effort and supported the initiative. Kaleidos’s environmental governance laboratory was also invited to participate by documenting the effect of the intervention on air pollution, which is the main problem for the El Vado neighbors.
