  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): "Volatile organic compounds are compounds that have a high vapor pressure and low water solubility. Many VOCs are human-made chemicals that are used and produced in the manufacture of paints, pharmaceuticals, and refrigerants". (United States Environmental Protection Agency)
  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia: "Leukemias are cancers that start in cells that would normally develop into different types of blood cells. Most often, leukemia starts in early forms of white blood cells, but some leukemias start in other blood cell types... “Acute” means that the leukemia can progress quickly, and if not treated, would probably be fatal within a few months. "Lymphocytic" means it develops from early (immature) forms of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell." (American Cancer Society)
  • Trichloroethylene (TCE): "TCE is a VOC. It is used primarily to make refrigerants and other hydrofluorocarbons and as a degreasing solvent for metal equipment. TCE is also used in some household products, such as cleaning wipes, aerosol cleaning products, tool cleaners, paint removers, spray adhesives, and carpet cleaners and spot removers." (National Cancer Institute).
  • community knowledge: Knowledge that is created, maintained, curated, and distributed by members of a community.
  • questionnaire: A list of questions that is used by researchers to conduct surveys.
  • mortality data: Data collected about the number and reasons of death in a population.
  • civil lawsuit: A legal, non-criminal disupte between two or more parties in a US court system.
  • epidemiology: The study of the distribution and patterns of health and health conditions in a population.
  • citizen science: The type of scientific activity that involves participation of non-scientists, members of the public, to contribute their time and investment to a scientific project.
  • civic science: The type of scientific activity that is oriented towards addressing public concerns.
  • community-based participatory research: A type of research that builds research questions and priorities with collaboration from community-based participatory research.
