Critical Commentary

In the middle of Dacheng Township (Changhua County, Taiwan) sits an empty white building. The structure was originally built to provide apartments for workers at the Formosa Plastic's 6th Naphtha Cracker Complex.

Despite, or because of, the immediate proximity to the petrochemical complex, no workers ever moved in. In contrast to many residents, workers might have been aware of the health implications -- studies indicate that the village has a higher cancer rate (Chen et al 2018) linked to toxic air pollution.

Today the half-finished building is known as "The Goat House", as villagers have appropriated the structure for farming and most recently, private storage.
