Critical Commentary
Enviva is the largest biomass processor in the United States. Nearly all the wood pellets which are exported to Europe are processed and distributed by Enviva. The Northhampton county biomass facility is Enviva's second facility in the state of North Carolina. This plant is permitted to produce 750,000 metric tons of wood pellets annually. Despite promises of economic development and job creation, the facility has only produced about fifty direct jobs at the plant. Northhampton county is also predominately African American (57%) and 21% of the residents of this county live below the poverty line. Community members like Belinda Joyner have voiced their disapproval of the facility but their complaints have been ignored by local government officials.
