Critical Commentary
This plan requires that investor owned utilities in the state to acquire 12.5% of their energy mix from renewables by 2021. This plan includes poultry waste and woody biomass as a renewable energy source. REPS requires that energy companies like Duke Energy purchase RECs from biomass production facilities. One Renewable Energy Credit is the equivalent of one megawatt-hour of electricity. These incentives are contributing to the increasing demand for biomass.
