The enviromental NGO "BUND Sachsen-Anhalt" and the LAV (State Anglers Association) announce in a press release that they have filed a lawsuit against the permit of the State Administration Office of Saxony-Anhalt for Ciech Soda to continue discharging contaminated waste water in the river Bode. They argue, that this permit endangers the habitat of protected species of fish and dragonflies. They also announce the plan to file another lawsuit at a later point that extends beyond the endangered species topic.
The artifact shows that resistance against the biggest water polluter in Staßfurt, CIECH Soda, is increasingly focusing on lawsuits, as the german environmental law is (in theory) relatively strict and provides opportunities to hold polluters to account. It also shows that NGOs in Saxony-Anhalt see state agencies as opponents in their struggle for environmental protection rather than allies.
