Critical Commentary

This 2021 expose from Politico explores the environmental effects of the growing biomass industry that disproprotionately negatively impact predominately low-income rural communities in the south. The article emphasizes how the communities are refusing to accept polluting corporations into their backyards without fighting for comprehensive air and water quality permits to protect their health. Politico also points out how these issues are exacerbated because of the nature of extractive industries, exposing how biomass burning in the UK designed to meet "renewable energy" standards comes at the expense of Eastern North Carolinians' lives and health.
